Nokia 6282

alt text

The Nokia 6282 is an unusual beast – but on the surface, it looks pretty normal – it’s a 3G slider with a large 320×240 pixel display, expandable memory and a 1 megapixel digital camera. This version of UMTS is unusual because most of the world uses UMTS operating at 2100 MHz which is a dedicated frequency range for this type of communication.

However in the US and Canada there is no dedicated frequency and UMTS has to share the same frequency range as GSM, in the 1900 MHz range. Because the UMTS 1900 networks in North America as still very new, and currently there’s a lack of UMTS 1900 handsets available, notably there is the Motorola A845 and the upcoming Nokia N80 will also support the 1900 MHz band.

There’s a 2.2″ display with 240×320 pixel resolution, multimedia player, miniSD memory card expansion and a FM radio. Unlike the 6280, the 6282 only has a 1 megapixel digital camera (the 6280’s is 2 megapixel) and it doesn’t have video calling capabilities. In addition to UMTS 1900, the 6282 supports GSM 850/1800/1900 and presumably GPRS, but Nokia make no mention of EDGE support. The handset
